In the last
issue, I gave you an exercise where you had to write down a list the negative
things you say to yourself. If you have diligently done the exercise, you now
have a list showing you your daily negative self-talk.
As explained
in the last letter, you will need to identify your negative beliefs in order to
replace them. Let’s get down to the specifics of identifying negative self-talk
and turning those to positive ones.
-I am not
good at numbers
-I can’t run
for more than twenty minutes
-I hate my
job
-I can stand
lazy people
You will
have noticed that these statements are made in the present tense, even though
they are mostly related to past actions. You have an amazing ability to carry
past experience into the present. Your desire to change will always be
overshadowed by the strength of your current beliefs, because you are applying
the present tense to negative experiences.
You will
begin to affect the process of changing your beliefs when you change the tense
of your statements.
-“I am not
good at numbers” becomes “I have had a challenge or two with arithmetic.”
-“I can’t
run for more than twenty minutes” becomes “I can run for up to twenty minutes.”
