I am going to make a
statement that goes against what is been taught in school and almost everywhere
for that matter. This is a more or less controversial statement and will
probably leave most people scratching their head: in term of your skills, only
focus on your strengths not your weaknesses. If you are weak on Maths and
strong on literature would it not make sense to focus on literature as your
strong subject? The result of focusing on your strongest skill is developing it
and elevating yourself among the best in that area. If you focus on your weak
subject, you will go from worse to bad which is only a slight improvement but
not enough to impress anyone.
I am sure a lot of people
reading this will disagree because they are not used to hearing something like
this but, let me reassure you that this is actually the way things are supposed
to be. Most people react with anger when they hear something that is against
what they hold to be true, the fact that a statement has not been challenged
for a long time does not make it true. You cannot be told to focus on your
weakness at the expense of what comes naturally to you.
We are all different people
with different set of skills, generally your strongest skill is what come easy
to you or what you enjoy doing. The question you want to ask yourself before
reacting on emotion is: what do you have to gain by focusing on your weakness
or weak skill to the detriment of your strong point? What is the benefit of working hard and for a
long time for a small improvement on your weak point when you could be
developing your strong point to be among the best?
Unfortunately, many people
are frustrated and unfulfilled with the life they are leading because they have
most of time taken the wrong advice of working on something that doesn’t come
naturally to them. You have the case of multitude who are working jobs they
don’t like because they have convince themselves that they cannot find jobs in
their prefer area of expertise. Others will happily tell you that it is to late
or they are too old to revive and follow their dream, even though achieving
that goal would have made them better performer and happier. If you want to
succeed in life, you have to identify your passion in life or your true calling
and focus on it with every single fibber of your being so you can rise to be
among the best your field.
You will not gain anything
worthy of your time by spending a lot of time and energy on your weak skill.
You were created with talent and, your objective is to discover what that is so
you can develop it to lead a better life. When you are focusing on your natural
ability you tend to excel, you feel happier and you make less effort compare to
those who are striving in an area not natural to them. If you are working a job
that you are passionate about, it ceases to be a job and become a labour of
love. Stay in your strength zone so you can be counted among the best.
