ARE YOU A COURAGEOUS OR A CONFORMIST?

What do you think most people do? Yes you guessed right, most people like to follow. So to put it in another way, we like to follow or conform to what someone else has done before us. It is for that reason that very few people want to lead, because it involves responsibility and being ready to take the blame for your mistake and that of your followers. It is always safe to follow others because in time of crisis we can easily hide behind them by claiming that we were following the leader. Following the argument above, we can safely conclude that most people are afraid to lead because they don’t want to be blame for the mistake of others. In other words, they are conformist.

If you are a conformist, you will always find an excuse not to get out of your comfort zone, you will be averse to risk and unwilling to take responsibility for your action. Contrary to what most people might think, the opposite of courageous is not coward but conformist. It is not easy to leave the beaten path and venture into the unknown in search of something different. You have to be determined and willing to challenge yourself to do it. The element of uncertainty in trying something new is what put off most people. No one wants to fail in their endeavour and doing something for the first time carries with it a greater perceived element of risk compare to undertaking an activity we are familiar with.

The problem associated with only doing what you are used to is that you will not make any progress and you will not grow. You begin to die when you stop yourself from growing. It might not obvious to you but, you need to grow to feel alive, to have an impact on your environment or be useful to the world. Your life only become worthwhile when you are growing and making the best use of your god given talents. The world is full of conformists and followers, they are always the first people to complain about the state of their life, they refuse to take responsibility for their actions and always quick to blame others.

Courageous people on the other hand are not afraid to take risk because they know the only way to grow is to challenge themselves. Courageous people are happy to venture outside of their comfort zone, they are not afraid to fail because they know you learn by making mistake. They understand and accept the risk associated with trying something new, they are prepared to fail in order to succeed. They are even willing to fail quickly so they can learn and achieve their goal. Courageous people don’t have the time to complain, if they are face with a situation not to their liking, they get to work to find the solution and fix it. They always accept responsibility for their actions, they are ready to learn from their mistake and swiftly move on.

At this stage of your life, you might be a conformist or a courageous person but, you need to understand that you have the choice of which side you want to belong. You can decide to switch side if you are not happy to be where you are. You can do so today.
